In El Salvador at least 124 people died, dozens went missing and 7,000 evacuated their homes after intense downpours brought by Hurricane Ida caused floods and mudslides in the Central American country, the government announced Sunday.

Miami, Florida (CNN) – Hurricane Ida made landfall Thursday morning over east central Nicaragua, pelting the Central American nation with heavy rain and weakening to a tropical storm.
At 1 p.m. ET, Ida had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) with higher gusts, the National HurricaneCenter said. It was earlier a Category 1 Hurricane with 75 mph winds.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Tropical Storm Ida uprooted trees, knocked down power lines and forced the evacuation of 300 people on Nicaragua’s Corn Island after forming Wednesday and quickly gaining strength in the southwestern Caribbean.

Nicaragua’s San Cristobal volcano produced a series of explosions that showered ash over nearby towns on Sunday.
The country’s Institute of Territorial Studies said the blasts were due to magma moving inside the volcano.
